Tax assistance group receives accolades

April 9, 2010

Beth Tucker, deputy commissioner for wage and investment at the Internal Revenue Service, recently lauded Loyola University New Orleans’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance group for its free tax aid to the community.

Tucker visited the group at Loyola to present a plaque from the IRS for “Outstanding Service to the Community” and to thank them for participating in VITA and other asset-building initiatives in the New Orleans area. In attendance were Andrew Piacun and William Neilson, VITA director and co-director, Diane Puderer from the local IRS office and Jan Pretus, stakeholder partnerships, education and communications territory manager for Louisiana and Mississippi.

The VITA sessions, designed by the IRS, provide free tax preparation assistance for people with low to moderate incomes. This year, VITA held sessions in New Orleans East and St. Bernard Parish. Extended hours were recently announced for the last day of assistance, Monday, April 12. Volunteers will be available from 1-7 p.m. at Loyola University New Orleans College of Law Broadway Activities Center, 501 Pine Street, Room 202.

Loyola’s VITA group was also recognized last July by the American Bar Association Law Student Division. Each year, the ABA LSD recognizes the achievements of individual law students, law school organizations and law schools on a national level through the division’s annual awards program. The LSD accepts applications for awards in several categories including volunteer income tax assistance programs.

Loyola’s application for the award last year highlighted their accomplishments including the formation of a tax law society at Loyola as a key component of the VITA program, the increasing number of tax returns prepared over the last few years culminating in the program’s highest output in 2009, and VITA’s first formal outreach to St. Bernard Parish, which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
