Students commit day of service to commemorate Katrina anniversary

August 20, 2010

First-year students at Loyola University New Orleans will go “Into the Streets” in commemoration of the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina on Thursday, Aug. 26.

The Class of 2014 will join university faculty and staff for a day of service involving projects within the greater New Orleans community. As an example of continued renewal, students, faculty and staff will volunteer through a number of organizations, including two home construction organizations, Rebuilding Together and St. Bernard Project; a cemetery and medical center cleanup, Operation Nehemiah; and other volunteer opportunities through ARC of New Orleans and New Orleans Recreation Department.

“Into the Streets” has become a tradition for new student orientation as a way for incoming students to observe Loyola’s Jesuit ideal of service and bond with future classmates. The day of service aims to bond new students with both the Loyola and New Orleans communities.

Each volunteer will receive lunch and a service day T-shirt and is required to wear closed-toe shoes and appropriate work clothes. After volunteering, participants will break into small groups for an onsite reflection led by student leaders, including Loyola University Community Action Program members and orientation Krewe Leaders.

Students, faculty and staff will meet in the St. Charles Room, located in the Danna Student Center, on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. for a small breakfast, check in and work site assignments. Participants will then gather in the Residential Quad for a short welcome and blessing by Kurt Bindewald, director of University Ministry, before loading onto buses at 9:30 a.m. and embarking to their different service projects.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to join the Class of 2014 and will receive liberal leave with supervisor approval. Those who are interested in volunteering must e-mail University Ministry, ministry@loyno.edu, with one’s name, campus department, contact information and T-shirt size by Monday, August 23, at 5 p.m.
