Loyola's Council named National Jesuit Player of the Week

February 18, 2011

Loyola University New Orleans women's basketball player Keiva Council was named the National Jesuit Player of the Week by the Jesuit Basketball Spotlight for her record-setting performance last week.

Council, a 5-8 guard from Houston, carried the Wolfpack to a perfect 2-0 record on the week and extended the Loyola winning streak to four games.

She averaged 29.0 points and 9.5 rebounds and scored a school record 43 points against cross-town rival Dillard. She made 13 of her 32 field goal attempts (5-11 on three pointers) and 25-33 from the free throw line.

Council leads the Wolfpack in scoring (16.8 ppg) and is in the top 15 in the nation in NAIA Division I in assists. It is the third honor of the week for Council, who was also named Southern States Athletic Conference and Louisiana Sports Writers Association Player of the Week.

Loyola (17-8, 5-3 SSAC) is currently in second place in the SSAC West, trailing Belhaven University by two and a half games. The Wolfpack will be in action to play Auburn-Montgomery on Saturday.

Out of the 28 Jesuit Colleges and Universities, Loyola is one of only eight schools to be undefeated in games against fellow Jesuit opponents.

The Wolfpack defeated Spring Hill twice this season. Gonzaga (4-0), Loyola-Maryland (4-0), Xavier OH (3-0) are the only other schools that are undefeated and played more than one JBS game. Boston College, Creighton, Loyola-Chicago, Rockhurst and all are 1-0 against Jesuit schools.

The Jesuit Basketball Spotlight pilot project is a nationwide effort to bring greater positive awareness to Jesuit education and mission. This project was developed by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in response to member institutions wanting to spread the word of Jesuit higher education through the more than 90 basketball games in which Jesuit institutions play each other (men and women) this year.
