Loyola faculty, staff attend national Jesuit social justice conference

August 2, 2013

This weekend, a delegation of Loyola University New Orleans faculty and staff will attend a national conference on justice in Jesuit education hosted by Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. The conference, “On Fire at the Frontiers: The Commitment to Justice in Jesuit Higher Education,” brings together faculty and staff from the 28 American Jesuit colleges and universities. It is organized by the National Steering Committee on Justice in Jesuit Higher Education.

Heather Mack, director of community engagement research and assessment, and Kelly Brotzman, director of Loyola’s Office of Service Learning, are featured speakers in the program. The two will present today, Aug. 2 during the parallel sessions held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. They will present research examining the prevalence of Jesuit values in service learning programs.

Mack will present research again Aug. 3 at 10:30 a.m. on “days of service” held at many Jesuit schools. She will also lead a roundtable workshop Aug. 3 at 3 p.m. helping participants use a framework to incorporate justice-related programming at their Jesuit colleges and universities.

Josh Daly of Loyola’s Office of Mission and Ministry will also present during a panel Friday at 3 p.m. on the topic of responsible investments at Jesuit institutions. In another panel discussion Saturday at 3 p.m., Daly will work with colleagues at various Jesuit universities on a draft document describing just employment practices and principles. The group hopes the recommendations will be adopted at several Jesuit colleges and universities.

Loyola Mission and Ministry Fellow for Service and Justice Programs and Loyola University Community Action Program adviser Joe Deegan, along with John Sebastian, Ph.D., director of the Common Curriculum, are also attending. More information about the conference is available online.
