Graduation ceremony to showcase live social media posts from students and their families

April 25, 2014

This isn’t your grandma’s graduation ceremony. This year, Loyola University New Orleans is harnessing the power of social media during commencement to help students and their families capture memories, share congratulations and create digital keepsakes—all in real time. Loyola is the only university in the New Orleans area to showcase live social media posts on multiple giant video screens throughout the Mercedes-Benz Superdome during its spring undergraduate and graduate commencement ceremony set for Saturday, May 10. Doors open at 8 a.m., and the ceremony begins at 9:45 a.m.

All students, parents, families and faculty members can submit photos during commencement simply by posting a photo to Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #Loyno2014. Photos will upload to the jumbo video screens in the Superdome.

All photos will be moderated before automatically posting. The posts will appear as early as 8 a.m. when visitors and students begin to arrive at the Superdome. The big-screen social media posts are automatically disabled during the commencement program and address so as not to detract from the ceremony.

After the ceremony, Loyola will feature the best photos using the hashtag #Loyno2014 in a special section of the university’s Facebook page.

David Gergen, adviser to four presidents and senior political analyst for CNN, will address the Class of 2014 and will receive an honorary degree during the ceremony along with former New Orleans Saints football player and ALS advocate Steve Gleason; alumnus Harold M. “Max” Messmer Jr. ‘67, CEO of Robert Half International, the world’s largest specialized staffing firm; Bethany Ewald Bultman, journalist, author and co-founder of the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic; and James E. “Jimmy” Fitzmorris Jr., prominent Louisiana and New Orleans politician and political adviser.

For those unable to attend commencement in person, a live webcast will take place on Saturday, May 10, 2014 beginning at 9:45 a.m. Central time for the undergraduate and graduate ceremony.
