College students bring local second graders' French stories to life through animation

April 25, 2014

Fifty second graders at the International School of Louisiana will see the French stories they wrote for school come to life for the first time thanks to Loyola University New Orleans graphic design students. The college students, who turned the stories into animations with English subtitles, will unveil them for the children Monday, April 28 in Loyola’s J. Edgar & Louise S. Monroe Library, Multimedia Room 2 from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

For the project, the Loyola students created 12 motion graphic pieces that—through type and image—enhance the second graders’ understanding of their fable or song and of the French vocabulary. At the same time, the college students incorporated English subtitles to help the non-French-speaking parents participate in their children’s education.

“The ongoing project and research, which embraces the vibrant French-speaking subculture that thrives in New Orleans, has the goals of getting the college students outside the classroom and embracing a distinctive facet of the city,” said Daniela Marx, interim chair of Loyola’s Department of Art and Design and associate professor of graphic design. “This is an amazing project and is a great example of Loyola’s commitment to experiential and service learning—education through hands-on experience. I have never seen college students so engaged than I have when their clients are kids.”

When children view the animations for the first time April 28, this will only represent the first step. Ultimately, Marx and her students want to publish the animations to a website, where French schools nationwide can benefit from the experiment.
